Golf season finished in full swing, 6th in state

Eagle, birdy, bogey, and par.  These words are strange jargon to most girls.  Then again, most non-Marian people are bewildered when they hear of the love of puppy-chow in this place.  Anyways…these strange terms are commonplace to the golf team.

There was something new on the green this year.  Well, a lot of things actually: a new coach and a completely new varsity team.  Ms. Ford coached last year’s team of five seniors.  She decided to retire after her seventeenth season and Mr. Sandall took on the job coaching an equally new team.

The new captains, seniors Kate Jansen and Lindsey Boler, were pleased with their new coach.

He was really excited about it; so it was good,” said Boler.

She was right; Sandall was excited about his accepting the new job,

“The position was open and I just saw it as a great opportunity to do something I love, and work with a great bunch of kids,” said Sandall.

The golf team was a great bunch of girls.  There were ten golfers total; five JV and five Varsity.  Boler’s favorite part of the season was,

“[J]ust all the girls that were on the team; it was a really fun team; we got along really well,” said Boler.

One thing that didn’t change this season was winning Metros.  This is admittedly a rebuilding year for the golf team but all the same they did it.  “[We won] Metros for the fifth straight time; we kept that record alive; that was really great for the team,” said Sandall.

The great finish at Metros continued to a sixth place finish at State despite unpleasant conditions.

“The first day there was horrible wind and it was all rainy and really gross and cold out,” said Boler.

Thus the season ended on a successful note.  All the hard work every week at practice paid off.  Like the swimming and tennis teams, golfers have to travel off campus everyday for their practices.

“On Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday we go to the Knolls and play 9 holes and on Wed we go to Oak hills to the driving range and just practice,” said Jansen.

Well the season and all it’s club carrying, ball hitting, team-bonding glory is over.  Luckily the girls will have fond memories to look back on and many of them have future high school seasons to look forward to.
