Arnold’s new role:

The Governator

Ashley Fredrickson

It looks as though Arnold has given up muscles and movies to pursue another dream.

Politics.

The former terminator won the governor election in California on Oct. 8, due to the recall of Gov. Gray Davis.

After extensive campaigning, Schwarzenegger prevailed with 44% of the Californian’s votes.

Because he is a fiscal Republican, the very liberal state of California is in for a change from Democrat Davis who was involved in state politics for nearly three decades. Marian students agree. “I give Arnold credit for embodying the ‘American Dream’, but I think that the people of California are in for a rude awakening when they find out how conservative he really is,” said senior Alison DeRoos.

On social issues, he sides with both Democrats and Republicans on various issues. On abortion, he is on the Democrats side with his pro-choice views; but his views on the death penalty and gay marriages line up with his Republican party.

Schwarzenegger plans to improve California’s education system. He plans on ensuring that every student has a quality textbook, the schools are safe and clean, tutors are available after school for students, and by making sure that the information students obtain is legitimate and accurate. “If Arnold follows through with his plans to change the system then that’s great- especially since some of the textbooks the students are using are flawed,” said school librarian Mrs. Broekemeier.

In some ways, Arnold may not be leaving Hollywood. Given the seriousness of California’s budget crisis, poor business climate, immigration issues and a loss of population for the first time in several years, his performance as Governor may require his best act yet.
