Escaping the cold & warming up to tunes…

at Christmas Dance

Teresa Prince

Sleigh bells ring, are you listening?  In the lane, snow is glistening.  A beautiful sight, we’re happy tonight, walking in a winter wonderland.  Walking in a Winter Wonderland was the theme of this year’s Christmas Dance.

Christmas Dance is an annual activity hosted by Student Board.  Senior Kate McCarthy and junior Lena Finnochiaro were the chairpersons in charge of organizing the whole event.  They put in many hours of work over Thanksgiving break to plan decorations and music and designate jobs to other Student Board members.

There was a change in setting for this year’s dance.  Unlike in the past, this year’s dance was held in the Old Gym

“The main reason was because there was going to be a basketball game in the New Gym the night before and we wouldn’t be able to set up until really late, after the game got over, and that was going to cause a huge problem because girls would have to set up all Saturday and wouldn’t be able to get their hair done, so the Old Gym was available and we decided to use it,” said McCarthy.  “From what I gathered, it was pretty nice because it forced people to be closer together and more of a dancing environment.”

The dance started at 8:30 on Saturday December 21.  Freshmen class officers checked attendees coats and belongings, and attendees proceeded on to enjoy the evening.  The dance took place in the decorated Old Gym, but the quad was open for those desiring a break from dancing.  About 200 girls attended the dance this year; the event raised about $5,000 for Student Board.

Senior LeLynda Briggs attended the dance for her third time.  “The music was better this year than it was last year.  It was cool.  I enjoyed myself,” said Briggs.  She really enjoyed seeing all her friends dressed up and dancing with her date.

Sophomore Kristen Cochran attended the dance for her first time.  Her favorite part was “dancing and not having to worry about having a date to hang out with,” said Cochran.  Cochran chose to go stag and felt she had a better time because of it.

The dance ended at eleven O’clock and girls grabbed their coats and dates to journey on to parties, Village Inn, and home.  The next day Student Board members came back to clean up from the festivities.  Whether it’s the twinkling lights, pretty dresses or the dancing that girls enjoy most, Christmas Dance is a successful holiday tradition here at Marian.
