Cheerleading, dance clinic promotes spirit, raises money

On most Saturday mornings, Marian is desolate, its normal inhabitants resting peacefully in their beds. It’s not often that 10-year-old girls are found running through the gym playing Simon Says and laughing wildly, but that was exactly the case on the morning of Jan. 31 during the cheer and dance clinic.

The Marian cheerleaders and dance team sponsored a clinic as a fundraiser for their teams. Ninety-one third through sixth grade girls attended the event led by members of the teams, dance team coach, Mrs. Michelle Delisi and cheerleading coach, Ms. Megan Piernicky.

The attendees were greeted at 8:30 a.m. and split into two groups by age: third and fourth grade and fifth and sixth grade.  Each group was taught a dance and cheer, given a bagel and juice snack and a t-shirt. At noon, the girls performed for their parents and friends following a performance by the dance team and cheerleaders.  This event has always been popular, but this year marks the first after a two-year hiatus.

The cost to attend the clinic was $25 per girl, making the total profit $600 for each squad.  Though the money is a major accomplishment, most considered the best part to be interacting with their little guests.

“I liked working with all of the little girls,” said sophomore dance team member Laura Jansen. “They were really sweet and I think that they all liked it, too.”
