The hottest trends of 2003

The year 2003 was a reminiscent year for fashion. As always, designers around the world found inspiration for their clothing through past trends and styles, only this time they merged new and somewhat “futuristic” ideas with the old ones. This past year was also the year of “gutsy fads,” consumers became bolder and braver with not only their taste but also their dollar, and it glistened on the fashion scene.

With snow came an array of dazzling fabrics such as silks, velvet, suede and fur. Sequins accompanied many of these elegant fabrics, whether it be on the skirts, shirts, or even accessories. More practical items, such as jeans and casual wear became bolder and better once these new twists were added. Throughout the winter, bright vivacious colors could be seen even on the coldest of days.

Spring was the season for 1950’s and 60’s glamour. With the warmer weather came pastels, full skirts, pointy-toed shoes, ribbons, bows, polka dots, and pearls. Anything feminine or “cocktail” was the look. Designers did a lot of combining this spring, things that were once fashion “no no’s” became the hottest trends. Mixing many patterns and prints with stripes was very hot. Eye blinding chandelier earrings could be seen on the ears of many females around Omaha as well as every other city that stays in the know with fashion.

As the temperatures began to rise the necklines fell, lower that is. Hot summer temperatures brought plunging necklines as well as the rebirth of the notorious “minis,” ultra low-rise jeans and even panties. Many fashion conscious ladies kept up with the latest crazes by strutting in basic tops with more complex bottoms.

This past youth-filled fall, fashion had no limits. From 80’s flash dance wear, to tailored menswear, women continuously made self-proclamations with their unpredictable attire.

Girls went even farther, showing their egotistical side as they sported monogrammed shirts, purses, wallets and anything else they could get their hands on. “I bought a matching purse and wallet with a ‘K’ on them, they look really cool together,” said freshman Katie Nedley. Many looked at the fall fashions with an anything goes attitude. Trucker hats, scarves, and high heels also made quite a comeback, and everybody was talking about “Von Dutch”.

2003 definitely kept trend seekers guessing.
