Everybody "can can" trick or treat

Candy isn't the only item being collected this Halloween.  Operation Others had its annual "trick-or-treat for cans" drive Oct. 29.   Instead of collecting candy this Halloween, Operation Others went door-to-door asking for canned good donations.

O.O. is a non-profit group organized through Creighton Prep that involves students from Marian, Skutt, Duchesne, Gross and Mercy.  O.O. fundraises throughout the year, leading up to the December delivery day weekend. During delivery day weekend, O.O. volunteers package food that is sent out to hundreds of Omaha families for Christmas.

Senior Brigitte Moland has been on the Operation Others core team since junior year.  She said the cans collected during the "trick-or-treat" drive are crucial to the success of delivery day weekend.

"We usually collect around 2,000 pounds of cans.  The cans then go to the packaging supplies used during delivery day weekend," said Moland.

The cans collected during the trick-or-treat for cans drive impact the planning for delivery day immensely.

"Without the donations of cans, Operation Others would have to buy them through the food bank.  Trick-or-treat for cans allows Operation Others to spend its money on other food items," said Moland.

Moland also said Operation Others is always willing to accept canned good donations anytime, even if you were unable to attend the "trick-or-treat for cans" drive.

Exact details from the can drive were not available at press time.  If you would like to be involved with other O.O. activities, contact any four of Marian's O.O. core group members: seniors Kate Neuhaus and Brigitte Moland, or juniors Maggie Berigan and Molly Boulay.
