Beginning band hits a high note
A serious drought of tuba
players has left the Marian community high and dry. Where has the music gone?
While this question will probably never be answered, there is an opportunity
for all Marian students to put the music back in their day.
Next year Marian will again
offer Beginning Band for all students to take no matter how poor they may think
their musical talents are.
Last year, Beginning Band
had a low enrollment causing the class to be exterminated from further
curriculum for the next semester and year.
However, Beginning Band has struck a new “chord” with students and Band
Director, Mr. Bruce Bartels.
“One of the most important
things to know about music is that it is never too late to start. Even if you have played before and just want
to switch instruments, Beginning Band can help a student rekindle their love
for music after years of being away from it,” said Bartels.
Not only is Mr. Bartels
excited to get this course rolling again, but there has also been a generally
positive outlook from students on the class.
“I’m not a dancer but I am
taking Ballet and Tap I next year. Just
like I don’t know much about dance I think it is good for people who don’t know
a lot about music to be able to take a class to learn how to play,” said
freshman Caitlin Hopkins.
To any of the students who
may feel that they don’t have any musical talent and will never be able to play
an instrument, Mr. Bartels has this to say,
“Anyone can learn how to play an instrument fairly well in one semester
if given the chance. Beginning Band
provides that chance to move forward with musical talent and into Advanced
Band.”
Advanced Band requires the
student to put on concerts, possibly attend District music and work with the
POPS Concert, providing background music for the show.
Even though registration for
next year’s classes is over, Beginning Band will continue hitting notes and
playing chords without an enormous popularity count. For future registrations, keep Beginning Band in mind for an
oasis in your music-less day.
