The Sunday, Jan 4th
snowstorm didn't stop the contestants of the Nebraska Junior Miss pageant from
awarding over $5.700 dollars in scholarships to its sixteen contestants.
Among those sixteen were
Marian seniors Jamie Kwasnieski and Kerry TerKuile, both of whom earned places
in the final four. Kwasnieski was named first runner up and received the award
for academics, and TerKuile earned the distinction of second runner up with the
award for poise. Nebraska City senior Shelby Tilts won the title of Nebraska
Junior Miss 2004.
The sixteen contestants were from all over Nebraska,
On Jan 4th, despite the raging snow, they met to compete for the
title of Nebraska Junior Miss. The girls were judged on academics, poise, a
ten-minute fitness routine, and interviews. Do not mistake this contest from
the average pageant. "It is all about being your best self. It's not a beauty
question. They care about who is graceful under pressure, not who looks best in
a dress, " said Kwasnieski.
There were four overall
winners picked, and then the final places determined from these four. Marian
has a history of finalists. Marian alum Christi Roach, '02, won the contest in
2002, as well as a $2000 prize and a paid trip to Nationals the following June.
