From Kish’s lips come helpful tips

Bethany Widman

Have you noticed something different during your Monday morning announcements?  No, they are not too much shorter than before.  Yes, Mrs. Delisi is still calling people to the office and telling people to turn off their lights.  However, a voice rarely heard before over the intercom has begun to wiggle it’s way into our subconscious.  Of course, only one thing could be different about announcements…It’s Ms. Kish and her weekly tips.

Text Box: Some Kish Tips:
Use People’s names
Look people in the eye
Say please and thank you
Surprise others with kindness
Remember people in prayer
Be organized
Cover your mouth
Pick up after yourself
Do not save seats
Do not say unkind things
Accept compliments and then give them
“I think the tips are great.  A lot of people learn these things when they are young but forget about them as they enter high school, especially an all girls one,”  said senior Stephanie Purcell.

However, these tips are not just for students.

“These weekly reminders are not just for students, but also the faculty and staff,” said Head of School Ms. Elizabeth Kish.

Previous to now Ms. Kish’s voice was rarely heard over the intercom unless someone was in serious trouble or someone’s parent or sibling had passed away.  Now, though, you can hear her over the intercom every Monday giving us a friendly reminder of politeness and courtesy.

“My favorite point that we have made this year, is the Friday morning prayer.  The Hail Holy Queen prayer gives us a moment of silence to pray for anything or person that may need our prayers.  It helps us care for each other and our families.  I think it will become a wonderful tradition here at Marian,”  said Ms. Kish.

These weekly tips may not be limited to this year.   Ms. Kish hopes to continue giving helpful reminders for years to come, perhaps even letting students submit their own ideas in the future.

So why this sudden spark of enlightenment every week? “I think it is good to communicate openly with the students and staff.  It’s an opportunity to have open communication and it’s a goal for me this year to re-invent and do everything differently and better.”

All in all, Ms. Kish and the tips she shares with the school have become another thing to separate Marian from the rest of the schools.  Some may find these reminders redundant and common sense but just think of how many times you have gotten someone’s attention by saying, “Hey, You!”  or coughing into the air for everyone to breathe in and leaving your hands behind you back.

“I love the tips.  They give me something to work on every week, something that I should already be doing but place in the back of my mind.” said Purcell

Next time you sit down in your Block G class on Monday afternoons, or perhaps she’ll have a sneak attack on a Monday morning, listen for Ms. Kish’s voice and remember that some work may be needed in the areas of courtesy and people skills.
