The two year Journalism Program at Marian is an exciting and rewarding opportunity open to juniors and seniors. Students are eligible for the junior journalism class if they have:
- a B+ average in English
- and/or current English teacher recommendation
Depending on enrollment numbers, the following PREREQUISITES MAY APPLY
- scored well on a grammar and editing test to be given at scheduled times by the journalism adviser
- passed the timed writing sample submission
- Interested students may also want to gain proficiency in Adobe PhotoShop and Adobe InDesign and i-movie software. You can explore them on your own, take the TAR sponsored classes or try enrolling in a Computer Applications Class. Any exposure you gain to these applications will help you.
Class size is limited. The above controlling factors will make the final decision if necessary. The junior course is designed to create and train dedicated, responsible, organized, knowledgeable, enthused, and ethical young journalists who will be members of the yearbook or newspaper staff, participating in both the textual and graphic side of both print and electronic versions. Editorial staff positions for publications are determined at the end of the junior course through an application and interview process. Summer camp experiences have also proven to be very effective in preparing a staff member for the requirements of the senior publications class.
Students will continue in the Honors level senior publication class to create the yearbook or newspaper if they:
It is highly recommended that journalism students also be enrolled in a study hall for at least their last two semesters.
- successfully complete the junior course with a B or better.
- meet adviser standards and deadline responsibilities
- commit dedication to the extra time and effort involved in the newspaper or yearbook publication staff.
